The Brooklyn waterfront and the cyclical relationship between water and land are often starting points for Serratelli’s work. She began drawing, painting and etching outdoors while on a Fulbright Grant to Italy years ago researching Byzantine icon paintings. From that experience of working in nature and noticing that varying light or cloud-cover changed what she was viewing, she became fascinated with how light determines the perception of depth and space. Serratelli’s work experiments with both the passage and obstruction of light and hopes to describe the spaces where matter and atmosphere co-mingle, a space somewhere between landscape and memory.

Toni Ann Serratelli has an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Tyler School of Art, Rome and Philadelphia campuses, an MA in Visual Arts Education from Parsons School of Art & Design and received a Fulbright Fellowship Grant to Italy for Painting and Etching. She also holds a post-baccalaureate in Painting and Etching from La Scuola Lorenzo De Medici. Her work is affiliated with Denise Bibro Gallery in Chelsea, NYC, Court Tree Gallery in Brooklyn. She is a full-time NYC Public School Visual Arts teacher and is in her 24th year teaching over 600 students weekly in grades K-5 at PS41 in Greenwich Village.
