Sunk Shore Tour and Workshop

Sunk Shore Tour and Workshop

Two-session workshop – April 30 and May 1, 11am – 2pm

Open Source Gallery’s next artists in residence, SUNK SHORE (Carolyn Hall and Clarinda Mac Low – click link for info!) look at the relationships we hold with our shorelines and in playful and imaginative ways, dream forward to the future of those relationships through time traveling walking tours. We are reaching out because Carolyn and Clarinda are interested in collaborating with community members (ages 15 and up) that live close to the Gowanus Canal to engage around the questions posed above. This two-part workshop is part of a series of activities that will take place in tandem with their show at Open Source gallery that will be up from April 23-June 5, 2022.
Sound intriguing? If you are already interested, please fill out this form to tell us a bit about yourself!

More about Sunk Shore:
Sunk Shore is a speculative tour of our climate crisis future that takes place along specific shorelines. The tours time travel is based on climate change data made relatable and specific to a local place, giving the often overwhelming facts weight and impact. The tours are based on research about events expected to take place (and already happening) in that place, including rising sea levels, changing animal species, higher heat, ingenious solutions, possible social revolutions, and more, using a combination of narrative, props, and participatory activities.

The Workshop:
We are looking for 15 community members who live near the Gowanus shoreline for a two-session workshop – April 30 and May 1, 11am – 2pm – where we will lead thought and artistic exercises, discuss climate change data, share local knowledge, and, on a chosen site along the Gowanus Canal shore, find playful ways to experience what the climate-changed future will look and feel like. Our goal for the community workshop is to inspire and encourage local residents along the Gowanus Canal to dream up their own speculative futures based on historical data, climate change predictions, their deep knowledge of the neighborhood, and their expectations, fears, hopes for the future of the waterway and neighborhood.
All workshop participants will be paid. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to develop and lead a Gowanus Canal version of a Sunk Shore tour, to take place in late May or early June 2022.

At Gowanus Canal on April 30, 2022. Duration: 24min Documented and Edited by Iki Nakagawa The workshop was part of the the exhibition at Open Source Gallery.
