THE 98 has produced seven immersive art shows in Boston, San Francisco, Paris, and London. They work with a global network of over 100 specialized artists born in the 1990s. Their shows create insight into the unique experience of a generation born at the turn of the millennia; each one focuses on a
different thematic question while emphasizing the impetus to go deeper and the power of process. Adapting to the unique circumstances presents THE 98 with a chance to prove that making and experiencing innovative art is still possible. 98 Studio: Illusion is a digital show that uses 3D scanning and VR technology accompanied by a 20 minute experimental documentary.

30 artists from around the world experiment with unconventional form, function, and collaboration to answer the question: “How much of reality is illusion?”. The viewer can experience 3D models, images, and videos through navigating a virtual tour of Jump Into The Light NYC– VR Arcade, Studio, and PlayLab . The accompanying film, 5 Degrees, starts by documenting this process. It follows the artists in quarantine as they dive into the world of illusion, and establish a new reality– reflecting the absurdism and emergence of a new social structure. The result is a bold and hopeful perspective of a generation that has been plunged into an unprecedented kaleidoscope of economic, medical, and social breakdowns. The creation of collaborative art during the chaos of our moment has set new rules in motion for how the rising generation might survive the third decade of the 21st century. The viewer experiences the process and product of these emerging voices.

For artistic director Mallika Chandaria, “the most powerful works of art can be distilled down to the union of spontaneity and attention to detail. It embraces generosity as its canvas”. She founded THE 98 three years ago and her experience directing theatre lends itself to the spectacle of 98 shows. The long term goal of THE 98 is to collaborate with artists and organizations to create experiences that shift as living entities.

THE 98 was founded in 2017 and specializes in immersive and experimental production. Our mission is to make art less predictable by pushing limits and connecting people together in unique spaces around the world.
