How To Build a Fire: Spiraling

When: Friday, February 28th @ 7:00 PM
Where: Open Source Gallery, 306 17th St, Brooklyn, NY 11215
Angela Glover Blackwell, talking about chaos and despair more than 10 years ago, focused on the weird inertia that can settle on you when you live in such times, how it seems the world is spinning out of control and all you can do is watch. That felt painfully right back in 2012 and feels even more disturbingly accurate today. Chaos and despair seem the purpose of so much of what is happening around us. What do we take from that into this month’s How to Build a Fire.
Last month, we came together to share space and share stories just 10 days into this new world. The stories were a balm, the company was a much-needed embrace. We still need the balm and the embrace … but we need movement, too. When Blackwell talked about the feeling that the world was spinning out of control, she told us that she made the choice to see, rather than spinning, that everything was spiraling upward. And so, our theme for February: Spiraling.
Chaos is definitely swirling around us … but we don’t have to get swept into it. We can hold true to ourselves and one another. How are we pushing back against despair? What are we doing to build forward – and upward – momentum? Come share space and stories on a cold February night. Let’s be in this together.
