cHURCH OF MONIKA: Romina Chuls

WHEN: May 14, 2023, 11:00AM – 1:00PM

WHERE: OPEN SOURCE GALLERY

Romina Chuls will present her most recent project on view at Real Art Ways from April 20th until July 16th. In this last project, Romina imagines abortion as part of a collective interdependent reproductive cycle. The project portrays abortions carried out between orgasms, where frogs perform as doulas and where bodies can project their fertility into the ground as an offering of growth to the soil. Romina will be talking about the research that inspired this first solo show in the US, taking us through her explorations on pre-Hispanic archives from the Peruvian coast and sharing her process behind the textiles and ceramic sculptures that make up this abortion ceremony.

Romina Chuls (1991, Lima) is a researcher and multidisciplinary artist. She holds an M.A in Arts Politics from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and a Bachelor in Fine Arts, with a major in painting, from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Her work focuses on postcolonial gender issues in Peru and Latin America, topics related to androcentric memory, gender violence, and sexual and reproductive practices. In 2021 she was granted the AAUW International Fellowship to support her studies at NYU and her research on anti-colonial pregnancy interruption practices. At the beginning of 2020 Romina opened her second solo show titled Clandestinas, project that portrayed the emotional stage of being pregnant with an unwanted being, at Galería Forum, Lima. She has also participated in several group exhibitions in cities across Peru and abroad, among which are Contextile: Contemporary Textile Art Biennial, Guimaraes (Portugal), and most recently Un-Script-It at Kunstraum, Brooklyn (USA).
