Afro 74 is part of an ongoing series of 70s inspired portraits that explores the ideas of self-made histories and mythologies.

Sean Qualls is an award-winning artist, illustrator and author. Mixing his love of portraits, patterns and vintage advertising graphics, Sean’s work explores themes of race, identity, history, mythology, innocence and power. In addition, he has also illustrated many widely acclaimed picture books, most recently Questlove’s debut, The Idea in You. Other notable titles include Giant Steps with Spike Lee and Tonya Lee Lewis, Little Cloud and Lady Wind with Toni Morrisson as well as Emmanuel’s Dream and Before John was a Jazz Giant. He lives and works in Brooklyn where, on occasion, you can also find him DJing.
