Sascha Mallon: Winter
DESCRIPTION
Sascha Mallon, Winter, 2023, 21″ x 21″, Porcelain with Underglazes, Mohai Silk Yarn
The plate Winter was part of a large-scale drawing installation with ceramic and woven elements. I draw onto porcelain objects with underglazes pencils, adorn them with yarn, then station them into vignettes connected by lace-like wall drawings. Intricate lines flow around the gallery, guiding viewers through a dreamy landscape. Some figures seem to float away while others nestle into tightly knotted spaces. The subtle narrative centers on a girl and her wolf companion, and themes of connection and transformation move through the work. I take inspiration from my own life as well as a deep concern for the human condition. In the donated plate winter one can see a woman sleeping under the snow and 3 women that can be seen as part of her floating with just a string tying them to the ground. It is a metaphor for disconnection, for the dreamlike and fragile quality of reality.
Value: $2,220
