The events of 2020 so far have driven us into our homes like never before, and into the streets in a way unseen by generations. We wake and sleep to calls for defunding the criminal legal system, vigils held for those passed into the next world from the ravages of disease, systemic racism, and at times a combination of the two. 2020, most of all, shows us that what was normal will no longer be normal, and it is up to us how to put together the lego blocks of our society to create whatever’s going to be next.
When did you last take something apart? Was it literally – a motorbike, a home, the bed your baby grew up in? What does it mean to deconstruct? Does dismantling always mean tearing down, always mean destruction? If we dismantle our social systems in the face of health and human rights crises, is that destruction or creation? Does everyone “fit” in whatever new systems are created? Who decides? How do we remake ourselves in ways that enrich us all, in ways that acknowledge the value of each of us, in ways that embrace our interconnectedness and the deep need to work together if we hope to survive?
Join us on Friday 26th of June to get into the guts of four stories to inspire, refuel, and check in with how we DISMANTLE!
How to Build a Fire was created by poet Terence Degnan. Each month, four diverse individuals share personal narratives centered around a theme. Their stories weave together an illustration of the human experience. This year’s hosts are Christina Marks and Stacie Evans.
Once it’s safe to be out and about again, How to Build a Fire will take place at Open Source Gallery — a welcoming, nurturing, intimate, safe environment, a participant-driven art initiative that provides space, community and conceptual context for creative play and critical commentary.
