How to Build a Fire is a community storytelling series where a diverse group of individuals share real-life, personal narratives centered around a different theme each last Thursday of the month. At times funny, at times sad, their stories weave together a broad illustration of the human experience. This March 30th, How To Build A Fire will take place at Open Source Gallery -a welcoming, nurturing, intimate, safe environment- where, monthly, one can see a new exhibition installed by an array of up-and-coming and established visual artists.
How To Build a Fire was founded be Terence Degnan. This year Stacie Evens and Lana Siebel will be co-curating and co-hosting.
Substantia Jones
An award-winning art photographer for more than 30 years, Substantia Jones’ photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout three continents. As creator of the Fat Liberation photo-activism campaign, The Adipositivity Project, she lectures on her work at universities, museums, and conferences; and consults for businesses and governments all across the globe, helping folks learn to treat fat humans like humans. Her words and images have been featured internationally in news outlets, magazines, newspapers, books, radio and television, and on more podcasts than she ever knew existed.
She’s a queer, Southern-born, belly-laugh enthusiast and lover of logic, who lives in Manhattan and always counts the shrimp in her Pad Thai to make sure it’s as many as last time. If, however, she’s on a date, she’ll try to do it without moving her lips. ‘Cause she’s fancy like that.
Lisa Jean Moore
Lisa Jean asked her 13 year old daughter, Greta, what she should say in her bio and Greta said, “Lisa Jean Moore is confident. She teaches sociology at Purchase College and has a hobby of making me watch documentaries where all the animals die. She’s loyal to her family and friends. And she is smart and beautiful.”
Kayt Hester
Kayt Hester is a comedian and visual artist from Jersey City, NJ. A year to the day after her first open mic set, Kayt won Audience Favorite in the Jersey City Comedy Festival’s Jersey Strong Showcase and was named one of the judges’ Top 3 in The Best of the Fest. Other credits include the Boston Comedy Festival. Her jokes have been featured in the New York Post. The Pixies used her artwork as a backdrop in their last tour. When not creating, Kayt enjoys bothering cats and wearing comfortable pants
Nikki MacCallum
Nikki MacCallum is a New York City based standup, actress, and musician. As a performer she’s been seen at Lincoln Center, Birdland, and has been featured on VH1 and CBS. Her book, DRY RUN was released by Auctus Publishers in 2019. Her solo show, ADULTING FOR IDIOTS just played a sold out Off-Broadway premiere at Theatre Row. @nikkimacncheese
Stacie Evans is co-host of How To Build A Fire Season 9 and is one of the four storytellers on February 24th.
Stacie Evans writes in long hand. With a fountain pen. Because she’s that girl: the wannabe homesteading, selectively Luddite girl who is addicted to her phone and regularly overshares online. She met James Baldwin in Paris … which will ever and always be the most glamorous and dramatic thing about her. Her writing has appeared in New South, After Ferguson, Bellingham Review, and The Rumpus.
Lana Siebel is co-host of How To Build A Fire Season 9. Lana Siebel performs all over the US, including NYC, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, NJ, Washington DC. She was selected as a featured comedian at The Connecticut Comedy Festival along with comedians such as Gilbert Gottfried, The Headliner Series in NY, The Punch Line Comedy Club in Philadelphia, as well as the Fairfield Comedy Club in Connecticut. As an actress, Lana is featured in numerous films and off Broadway plays. She studied acting at Lee Strasberg Institute and HB Studios with Austin Pendleton. Lana was also a competitive International Latin style Ballroom dancer ranked internationally and 7th in the US! She immigrated as a refugee from Kharkiv, Ukraine when she was seven years old with her family to Brooklyn, NY where she grew up and now resides.
