This sculpture was made in response to Louise Glück’s poem The Red Poppy in The Wild Iris. As an educator, I have students read from The Wild Iris, select a poem, memorize the poem, and interpret it in clay. I work alongside the students interpreting a poem of my own choosing from the book. This poem speaks to an opening and closing of one’s body, an interconnectedness, and an emotional openness that feels reminiscent of the sculptures in my exhibition, this pot is made of earth and when it breaks, my father laughs, at Open Source.
