Shane Charles: Redbird

September 6 - October 12

September 6 – October 12, 2025

Redbird is a large red paint and wood installation created on site and positioned across the gallery floor. Redbird is a meditation on transformation and healing in which Charles incorporates pieces from Maine-based craftsmen (independent lumberists, machinists and foundries) to create new work for this exhibition, which also features a performance activation with interdisciplinary based artist and vocalist Luisa Muhr.

As contemporary meditation on the “body in the landscape,” Redbird marks an important continuation in Charles’ work, emphasizing automatism within sculptural form. Shane Charles is an artist with a legacy of land and body art and uses raw organic materials (e.g., beeswax, clay, ash) for large-scale, process-based, and performance installation work. Viewing art as social poetics, Charles’ wide-ranging practice expands notions of contemporary sculpture into the performed and lived.

Shane Charles takes an interdisciplinary approach to site specific, and serial performance installation work, which incorporates movement based-artists and improvised or choreographed actions with raw organic harvested materials. His work incorporates pieces commissioned by Maine-based craftsmen (canoe builders, metal foundries, ceramicists). Recently, his practice is focused on the use of timing and fluid materials, which become static—creating sculptural form through the action of automatism. Body movement and body print is consistent in his work, as well as the themes of the landscape, specifically as it relates to generational and geologic time. Charles continues in the legacy of his Penobscot surveyor father, thinking of his work as situations that have artistic form.

Shane Charles is an American sculptor and installation-based artist. His works have the poetics of personal histories, and social actions within a process of drawing, mixed-media, and assemblage. Informed by Dadaist and Fluxus collage and performance his practice forges along the complexities of legacy by weaving an iconography of an intimate cartography.
