Join us for a reception to view Lauren Pirie’s Living Soil Sculpture at the KoKo Lot! Lauren is the current Lot Artist-In-Residence.
This new living soil sculpture project expands Pirie’s installation practice by aligning materials and processes more directly with the ecological themes she explores. The resulting works take the form of biomorphic sculptures—reminiscent of her past soft sculptures, but made from biodegradable textiles, filled with soil and seeds, and growing living plants from their surfaces. The sculptures—roughly human scale—will be installed at ground level, their entangled forms subtly evoking human, non-human, or anthropomorphic beings or appendages. As containers for soil and life, they may grow, transform, and decompose over time, existing beyond Pirie’s control.
This first experimental installation is the culmination of a research period including consultations with experts across horticulture, soil science, and textiles. Key collaborators include Graham Teeple (permaculture), Ashley MacDonald (Indigenous co-design, land and materials), Julieta Gaitán Rubio (textiles), Natasha Myers (plant studies and anthropology), and Colleen Dempster (compost).
