HTBAF: Exploitation

November 22 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

For November How to Build a Fire is, once again, in the gallery with Marlene Hausegger’s exhibit, “Scabby: A Rat About Town.” Scabby, the giant rat who stands outside non-union work sites to flag for us the ways some employers see us as drones built for plumping their bank accounts rather than as people. Inspired by Scabby, our theme this month is “Exploitation.”
Thinking about unions brings to mind the ILGWU jingle:
Look for the union label
when you are buying that coat, dress or blouse.
Remember somewhere our union’s sewing,
our wages going to feed the kids, and run the house.
We work hard, but who’s complaining?
Thanks to the I.L.G. we’re paying our way!
So always look for the union label,
it says we’re able to make it in the U.S.A.!
Remember somewhere … a union’s working. Keeping work from working over the workers.
And now, in light of the downward shift in our political landscape, we think about the scabs being called in to serve in a series of hugely important jobs for which not one of them is trained or qualified. Can our Union hold? Will it enable us to keep making it in the USA?
Time will tell. And Friday the 22th will be time for telling stories, tales of exploitation … perhaps a fitting way to slide into our celebration of gratitude on the 28th. Join us in the gallery for some collective action. ❤️
