Open Call: Artist-In-Residence Program

The OS Gowanus Artist-In-Residence program is a new program that is intended to support process-based work. OS Gowanus’s Artist-in-Residence Program is an opportunity for artists to work in the OS Gowanus space for three months beginning September 1. Art presented at OS Gowanus must have a focus on social, political or environmental issues that engage with the history, communities or culture in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Priority will be given to Gowanus-based artists. Viewings, performances, talks and other events are encouraged during the time the artist-in-residence occupies the space.
Artists should be interested in:
- Gowanus
- Process-based or socially-engaged work
- Community engagement
- The OS Gowanus mission
Artists are NOT required to:
- Have a degree or history of exhibitions
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Present a specific proposal
Artists will:
- Pursue lines of inquiry and process rather than focusing on a finished product
- Organize at least two public events of their choosing during their time in the program
- Collaborate or work with community members and existing community projects or organizations in Gowanus
- Display work in progress at OS Gowanus
OS Gowanus will provide:
- A workspace in a building that is the home to educational programs, a garbage truck repair shop and recycling center
- Internet
- $500 stipend
- Press outreach and advertising for events
OS Gowanus will NOT provide:
- A quiet workspace (businesses in the area can be quite noisy!)
- Specialty materials (artists are welcome to use the craft materials already in the space or anything they bring with them!)
- Housing
