For this month’s cHURCH OF MONIKA, Open Source presents A Global Good Morning or Let’s All Wake Up, an artist presentation and discussion led by Craig Damrauer.
Global Good Morning is a growing collection of recordings of people around the world greeting the day. When we have enough recordings, we’re going to place them around a large ring of speakers with each good morning at the longitude and time of waking. It will be a sound sculpture that runs for 24 hours and a viewer at the center will get a visceral sense of the turning of the earth as a wave of good mornings travels around, and around, and around, and around.
Fundamental questions: Is it possible to connect ourselves to the turning of the Earth? To each other? And if so, what does this do for us as individuals and as a species? Bonus question: How the heck do we get everyone on Earth to participate in an art project? Further bonus question: What’s so wrong with being optimistic nowadays?
Craig Damrauer does conceptual projects that tend not to look or act like one another. They’re linked by a certain kind of experimentation and concern about systems. These can be the systems that engender the ways we’re spoken to, the ways we talk to each other, the roles we’re given or play, and our relationship with nature. Craig graduated with an MFA from the University of Arizona. His work has been shown at The Bronx Museum of Art, Contemporary Arts Center – New Orleans, Los Angeles Contemporary Editions, Masur Museum, MCA Denver, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Pulse Art Fair, Paul Smith’s GLOBE Gallery among others. He is a contributor to the New York Times, the Atlantic and GOOD Magazine and was the recipient of a year-long artist residency at Mana Contemporary.
Join us at the cHURCH for Craig Damrauer’s A Global Good Morning or Let’s All Wake Up. This is a free and public event. Bagels and coffee will be served.
