artist-in-residence: Katarína Poliačiková

In the month of July, the Slovak visual artist and writer Katarína Poliačiková is our artist-in-residence.

Katarína’s work evolves around the observation of the everyday and storytelling, with the aim to speak about deeper and more complex issues through intimate, personal (hi)stories. She works with different mediums, mostly it’s photography, video, performance, and text.

On and off, Katarína has been collaborating with the Open Source Gallery since her first exhibition in 2013.

During this summer, Katarina is working on a new project that stems from her personal history which is closely tied to New York City – her great-grandparents, who were both immigrants from Eastern Europe, had met and got married in Manhattan in 1908. However, after their first child was born, they returned to Europe and continued their life there. With this story as a point of departure and the particular places in the City that are tied to this family history, she creates a new space to engage with strangers based on a special form of exchange, inviting them to share their own stories.
