Join us for an artist talk with curator and director of the HAI Gallery & Art Studio Francis Palazzolo and artists Ray Lopez and Laura Anne Walker who will discuss their intersubjective lens on art: How visualizing otherness and kinship together mends alienation and supports diversity. In early spring 2014 Palazzolo initiated a conversation with Lopez; remarking that many of Lopez’s peers at the Healing Arts Initiative have a knack for using their artwork to put themselves in another’s shoes (Walker being a major proponent). Palazzolo recognized that this practice was a source of strength and wellness for these artists and encouraged Lopez to join in. The Sole Exchange exhibit is the result of this process.

Francis Palazzolo is the curator of Sole Exchange. Palazzolo organizes art to disrupt the high degree of cultural polarization by straddling discord & mending alienation. Since 1985 he has exhibited artwork in 6 solo shows and 36 group shows in the US and Europe. In 1994 Palazzolo co-founded the art studio & gallery at the Healing Arts Initiative, currently serving as director and curator. His work has been covered by publications including the NY Times, Art Forum and the Daily News, he has lectured at conferences and universities in the US, and the art studio is a three-time recipient of the NEA’s Challenge America Grant. Palazzolo received a BFA in painting and sculpture at SVA in 1985 and an MA in philosophy and fine art at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2000.

Ray Lopez had his first solo in Brooklyn NY at the Heliopolis Gallery in 2012. Since 2006 he has been in many group shows, most recently this year at the White Columns Gallery in NYC. News media about his art include an article in the Daily News, and a feature role in Artistic Energy-The Bronx, a documentary that aired at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Laura Anne Walker had her first solo show in NYC at the HAI Gallery in 2006. In the past twenty years she has appeared in more than fifty group shows which include the Noyes Museum, Wesleyan College, Lesley University and Exit Art. Numerous articles feature her work in publications such as Raw Vision and the Folk Art Messenger. Laura Anne is represented by the Healing Arts Initiative and has been on display at the Outsider Art Fair since 2011. She is also on the Board of Directors at HAI since 2006. Her notable collectors are Larry Silverstein, Patch Adams, Kim Cattrall, and the Hartford Hospital.
