James Leonard, The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies, 2016

James Leonard creates works that engage pressing ecological concerns, including climate change, ocean acidification, and peak resources. With The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies, Leonard utilizes traditional divination as a tool to transform anxiety and fear over environmental threats into impetus for informed action. Leonard’s hand-stitched tent, comprised of colorful, recycled fabrics, will serve as sacred space for guided meditation, ritual, and storytelling. Using ceremonial Tarot readings as participatory performance, Leonard aims to emotionally prepare individuals so that they may help mitigate, survive, and ultimately live with the impacts of climate change.

James Leonard’s exhibition record includes Queens Museum, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Wasserman Projects in Detroit, the Delaware Art Museum, and MASS MoCA. His work has been supported by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the Jersey City Parks Coalition, and the Boston Center for the Arts. He has presented as visiting artist at institutions including Cornell, Harvard, and American University.
