A collaboration project by Felipe Mujica with Monika Wuhrer and Ferran Martín

Opening Reception: April 14th, 7-9pm
April 14th -30th

The title of this exhibition is the negative version of a previous project developed by Felipe at Open Source Gallery: One day this will all be yours. The continuity of this statement – and its supposed negativity – is intended as an exploration into the question of authorship and ownership and also as a critical joke towards the possible accomplishments of modernism. Being Open Source a community based gallery Felipe has decided to present a collaborative project which has been developed before in different spaces under different circumstances: Linea de hormigas is a sculpture-based project in which Mujica constructs – and in some cases asks other people to construct for him – modernist yet poor and ephemeral three- dimensional sculptures.

The pieces vary in shape, size and color yet they are always built using the same materials and procedure: thin wood beams are “colored” and attached to each other with electric insulation tape. Sometimes set up in exhibition spaces sometimes set up in homes or in public spaces such as parks, rooftops or party rooms, the sculptures aim to talk about the failure of modernism. This should be read against the history of modernism in Latin America, its aspiration of change and promise of a modern and more equal world… On the other hand Latin American modernism succeeded in the development of a new language, one that responded to specific conditions of its context, expanding its own work procedures from the pure formal into the socially engaged.

For the exhibition at Open Source Felipe has asked for the collaboration of Monika Wuhrer and Ferran Martín. Monika (and who ever she wants to include in the project) will construct, following basic guidelines, modernist-like sculptures to be placed in different locations around Open Source Gallery. Photos of these temporary sculptural actions will be taken and later exhibited. Ferran Martín will present a new base-platform piece for the display of Linea de hormigas. This functional piece relates to Granada, a project Ferran presented at Newman Popiashvili Gallery in October 2011, which consisted in the construction of a new wood floor with a burnt geometric pattern resembling a Moorish design of Alhambra. The inclusion of this platform piece is basically a search for a new encounter, between two different histories, uses and sensibilities of geometry… Hopefully these new encounters will release a new and unknown energy.

(Man and woman enter. Man and woman stand still and look around for about two seconds.
Man and woman look at one another shortly before turning to look around again.)

Woman (Assertive)
No.

Man (Almost at the same time)
No.

(They leave)

(Man and woman enter. Man and woman stand still and look around.
The man takes of his cap and looks at woman. Woman waves and smiles at
someone further inside the room.)

Woman
I’m sorry, my ex – husband is here.
(Walks one meter forward. Man follows)
(Silence)
Do you think I can get away with just a wink and a smile?

Man
Not if we stay here, no. Not in this place. Too much space in too small a
room.
(Silence)
(Woman waves again)
You’re bound to have to greet him properly on your way to the
restroom.
(Man looks at woman and smiles friendly)
Did you get along?

Woman
(Lifts her eyebrow)
I guess we got along as long as we got along. Certainly not longer
though. He made me realize my mediocrity and I made him pay by being
exceptionally boring.

Man
Well, if that’s so… at least then in one way he made you exceptional.

Woman (Smiles at man)
Yes, you have no idea.
(Looks away)
Lets leave.
(Man puts on caps and they leave)

(Man and woman enter a new place. Man looks around. Woman looks
to the floor.)

Woman
Brave pair of sneakers you are wearing.
(Looks up.)
This is more like a very dirty tennis-court. Everyone would just watch
us.

Man (Nods to the left)
Not those two.

Woman (Looks shortly to the left)
Yes, they are the players now, but soon it’ll be us.

(Man and woman leaves slowly. Man and woman enter new space)

Woman
I think I told you I wanted to dance.

Man
My sneakers are ok.
(Man and woman look around)
You told me you did not really mind anything anymore.

Woman
True.

(Man and woman are dancing. Man does not know what to do with his cap.)

Man
I feel like I’m the dancer in the dark now.

(Silence)

Woman (Smiles slightly)
I feel more like I’m the dancer in the fart.

(Man sniffs and opens his eyes.)

Well, this smell certainly gives this room a whole new dimension

Man
It wasn’t me!
(Turns red)
(Woman looks at red man)
(Silence)

Woman
Actually it was me.
(They dance a little faster now).

Opening reception: April 6th

“Expanding upon his 2010 Streetsmart project in which he photographed his photorealistic architectural sets of decaying 70s era New York buildings on the streets of Park Slope using surreal compositional juxtapositions, Peter Feigenbaum’s Streetsmart II: XRO takes the exercise one step further into surrealism and psycho-geography.

Feigenbaum has since created a portable module that allows his sets of miniature abandoned buildings to be mounted atop the roof of a car. In late 2011, he scoured the rapidly gentrifying outer reaches of Bed-Stuy and Harlem to find the city’s last remaining derelict boarded up blocks(often marked with the Fire Departments “XRO” tag, signifying “roof out”).

After double parking on busy city streets and deploying the installation on the roof of his car, Feigenbaum acted quickly and decisively to take photographs that created a strong surreal compositional dialogue between the real life abandoned buildings in the background and the miniature sets in the foreground that mimic the reality behind them. While the images have parallels to hyper-real architectural renderings, the resulting scenes suggest anti-architectural interventions and a lust for urban entropy. Thus via Feigenbaum’s photographic interventions, the city’s few remaining derelict blocks become time warps into the feral, moody, ghost-world of decaying 1970s New York City that he has been obsessed with via his work”

Der Kommissar offers a Brooklyn twist on an Austrian institution, the Würstelstand. Sausage stands in Vienna are far more than glorified hotdog carts, they are the nexus of food culture. Rather than taking their food to go, patrons tend to hang around, have a beer, and interact socially. Featuring a menu of artisanal Austrian-style sausages, eight draft beers, and an extensive selection of schnapps. Der Kommissar brings a little bit of Vienna to 5th Ave.

the-meeting.net

The Meeting is an event in honor of the life and work of the late Karl Spörk, who was an International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) resident in 2000, sponsored by bm:ukk, Austria. The Meeting, hosted by ISCP, includes an exhibition and panel discussion and is organized by artists Nick Kline and Monika Wuhrer.

The title of the exhibition is based on The Meeting, a work from 2000 by Spörk. This 63-second video is essentially a conversation between Spörk and the great Northern Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. Set in a darkened room, each sits in a separate chair with their back to the camera facing a television; the video depicts Spörk’s animation of Dürer’s anatomical figure studies in which the arm moves to touch it’s own genitals. Reminiscent of a psychotherapy session, there is a long period of silence until Dürer praises the artist on his manipulation by saying, “I like it” to which Spörk responds, “I am glad you like it, Albrecht.”

This exhibition brings together numerous international artists and curators reflecting the intensity of Karl Spörk’s life, especially as seen through his work.
