REIMAGINING TRADITION: The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies

September 30, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

James Leonard presents “The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies” as part of “Reimagining Tradition,” a series of site-specific projects throughout NYC.

James Leonard creates works that engage pressing ecological concerns, including climate change, ocean acidification, and peak resources. With “The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies,” Leonard utilizes traditional divination as a tool to transform anxiety and fear over environmental threats into impetus for informed action. Leonard’s hand-stitched tent, comprised of colorful, recycled fabrics, will serve as sacred space for guided meditation, ritual, and storytelling. Using ceremonial Tarot readings as participatory performance, Leonard aims to emotionally prepare individuals so that they may help mitigate, survive, and ultimately live with the impacts of climate change.

“Reimagining Tradition” is a program developed by Open Source Gallery to highlight intersections between socially engaged art and ritual practice through a series of site-specific projects by New York City-based artists. Pieces in “Reimagining Tradition” defy the constraints of traditional gallery exhibitions and blur modern distinctions between art and the sacred. Artists in the program include: Leigh Davis, Erin Ellen Kelly, James Leonard, Jasmine Murrell, Nia I’man Smith, Ultracultural Others
