OPEN SOURCE CARNIVAL

Come on down to the Open Source Carnival for a rollicking good time! Suit up in your favorite costume, bring a taste for the bizarre, the spontaneous, the sublime… and bring a little pocket change, too. A benefit to help Open Source Gallery rebuild after the fire last November, the Carnival will feature a festive variety of performances by a dozen local artists and musicians all day long.

It all takes place in a four-story wal…k-up rendered uninhabitable last November as firefighters fought the fire in the adjacent gallery building. Concurrent with the Carnival is a group exhibition throughout the vacant brownstone entitled ASSOCIATED, and together these events serve as something of a New Orleans style funeral and wake for the building. Come on out, join the spectacle and help us transform this disaster site into one of celebration!

“The News: Monday-Friday”

The News: Monday-Friday is a collection of five songs written one per day of a single work week, the lyrics being found poems compiled from each day’s newspaper. While rooted in words and phrases from the actual news, the songs build upon each other to tell their own “subconscious current events” story. It is a tale of a community struggling with its spirituality when faced with leaving home and transitioning towards a strange and unknown future. Sara will perform the entire song cycle on guitar, mandolin and autoharp as well as other recent work. She recently performed her last album Songs of Lewis & Clark at Open Source.

Adam Day

Saturday, Nov 13th, 8pm

This kid – he’s right off the farm, or maybe picked up from the side of the road, dirty hair and unshaven, mouth like a sailor, and manners like a distinguished gentleman. He can talk to you on anything from yesterday’s hangover to 20th century literary figures. He’ll tell you stories that will bust your gut laughing, and others that will shut you up and make you wonder where this kid is from. You listen to him, you think about where you grew up, who you’ve loved, who you might find, or where you might end up. You’re sad, excited, and can’t stop smiling all at once.

This is 25 year-old Adam Day, hailing from Baltimore, MD with a guitar in-hand and a story on his breath. In the vein of James Taylor, John Mayer, and, Ray LaMontagne Day has been stunning audiences with meticulously crafted songs and stories about the complexities of the human experience.

In every town that he resides, this quirky, at-times-awkward, and lovable fellow garners local celebrity and is loved by those with an appreciation for well-written and melodic folk rock tunes.

Susie Asado: Hello Antenna

Sept. 18th, 7-10pm

_3

Susie Asado is the poet and songwriter Josepha Conrad. She grew up in Frankfurt am Main and in Chicago and naturally geographic challenges and a life between countries are her main subjects. “Hello Antenna” is the title of her debut album released on the German independent label Lolila in 2008. These songs are about borders and crossing them, about falling in love with border patrol and with countries and that is more than one country. They are about the construction of home and the relationship to fictional characters and books. In many ways Susie Asado is a dialog with the writings of Gertrude Stein. You might know Josepha’s strange wordy songs from Crazy for Jane, the band that she has with her brother Philipp. You might have seen her in Uli M Schueppel’s film “Berlin Song”. You might have run into her along the Landwehrkanal in Berlin where she currently lives.

Simon Joyner: May 26th, 8pm

promo31Simon Joyner was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, but he’s lived in Omaha, Nebraska most of his life. The geography, mythology, and personal connection to both the South and the Midwest act as shadow characters throughout his large body of work–swallowing some characters, emboldening others, always reminding us that place is much more than mere scenery. Joyner’s songs and stories focus on struggling or haunted characters who confirm their humanity during moments of strength and weakness, disappointment, failure, and, of course, love. “Deconstruction” takes place a few years from now, after the U. S. has been defeated in World War III. In some major American city, Emma and Trudy are assigned to the same work detail to clean up the post-war rubble. Their very different pasts and personalities clash immediately.

The Play is written to be and will be performed during the opening reception of Rachel Youens show at Open Source called “Cornucopias”.
