100 Days After

Sunday, Oct 2, 7pm:

Miho Suzuki visited Miyako City, Iwate, Japan this summer, where she photographed ruins and transitions at the fisherman’s towns and the city. 100 days after the cataclysmic earthquake and the massive tsunami hit northern Japan much of debris had been removed or organized into big piles. Over thousands of damaged houses were still left standing and waiting to be dismantled. People just started moving to temporary shelters or school class rooms instead of living in school gyms.

Green Idea Pool

Open Source is looking for ideas to winterize its gallery. We are looking for creative problem solving for green low cost solutions. The space is essentially a converted garage with its original carriage doors.

We have already received some wonderful entries including Sam Bargatz from Loadingdock5, Gregory Duncan, and Ryan Enschede. Now we are ready to increase our idea pool. To bring your projects into being, on November 2nd, we will host a fundraiser and introduce the project to inspire your ideas.

We are now building an energy model with Gregory Duncan and are starting to measure our energy use.

Open Source Gallery is a 501(c)(3), all donations are tax deductable.

KOKO is an after school program for kids aged 5 -14 years old. We offer a variety of creative workshops in screen-printing, photography, woodwork, textiles, graphics, painting, sculpture and many more.

The kids are split up in two age groups (5-7 years old and 8-14 years old), as well as we consider each child’s experience. We are flexible with age and group participation.

Our aim is to introduce young people to different creative methods, give them an overview and a chance to experiment with nonstandard techniques.

The kids can work according to their pace. We will encourage them to learn a technique, experiment with it and develop a project.

They can design and print their own T-shirts, explore methods in digital and film photography, use our wood-workshop under strict adult supervision, design costumes and wall pieces.

We try to support each child in its needs and interests.

On top of that we want to introduce KOKO kids to important institutions in the art world. Explore the works of famous artist in shows at the MoMA, New Museum, Metropolitan Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, Queens Museum of Art and other.

We will schedule our monthly museum visits according to the most interesting line-up.

The goal of KOKO creative kids program is to have the children develop a unique project and give them the opportunity to exhibit their work in OPEN SOURCE GALLERY. There is an annual group show for all KOKO kids to share their work with the public!

The schedule for all classes 1-2 months ahead is on view online. The kids can pick their favorite ones or join us for every class as much as they want.

KOKO classes take place every Tuesday and Thursday (except holidays – watch out for special events), 3:30-6:30pm on 257 17th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

We also offer 30min homework time on request. Please feel free to leave us a message for any other inquiries.

ALL TOOL USE UNDER STRICT ADULT SUPERVISION.

The Vagabonds!

Wendsdays

Artist Workshop for Kids
Ages 8-12

Sept 21st JAMES LEONARD introduced the program

This year, Open Source is offering a new after-school program for kids from 8-12 yrs old. On Wednesdays, the “Vagabonds!” will be traveling as a group to museums, galleries, and public art spaces, using the city as our classroom. Based on the “Museum School” model, a traveling middle school in Chelsea, directors Raphaela Riepl and Monika Wuhrer, will introduce 10 kids to a variety of artists. Students will develop their own art projects and attend workshops with various guest artists beginning with James Leonard from Open Source Gallery. Mr. Leonard will introduce the students to portrait drawing and discuss the creation of his exhibit “No Fishing,” his current exhibition at Open Source Gallery. At the end of the twelve weeks, the students’ work will be displayed at the Open Source Gallery for a special show.

Our third annual Soap Box Camp, held over the summer, was wildly successful. The children loved it and we had a great time helping them build vehicles out of found materials. This will be Open Source’s first after-school program. With Vagabond!, we hope to create an inspiring, challenging and fun time, with a great exhibition at the end!

In Their own Language

Thursdays

Artists teach in their native language

Ages 6-12

In October 2010, Nobuko Suzuki taught an origami workshop at the Open Source Gallery in her native Japanese. The workshop was so successful, that we decided to transform it into an after-school program. Taking advantage of New York’s multi-cultural population, we have invited bi-lingual artists from Japan, Italy, Peru, Austria, and Korea to come each Thursday to teach a unique hands-on workshop **in their own language**.
Some of the **Thursday** workshops offered will be **screen printing, wood carving, and painting**. The students do not need to speak the same language to benefit. They will be introduced to the art through gesture and observation, absorbing the connection between language and art while glimpsing the richness of world culture.

November: Italien – Katerina Marcelja
December: Spanish – Renzo Ortega
January: Japanese – Miho Suzuki
