Make Soap Box Racers! July 13th-August 8th

THE Derby

soapboxderby.jpg

On August 8th, 17th street will be closed to traffic and will be having one of its annual block parties. Given that we are in the South
Slope, our street provides enough incline for a soap box derby, woohoo!

You can email me to sign up for the children’s race at 11.30 am or the adults race at around 1pm
just email or come by the gallery in the morning until 1pm to sign up.

*We will obviously be taking every precaution to make this event as fun and safe as possible for the kids including brakes on the cars and a net on the end of the course but a bicycle helmet and any other protective gear is surely a good idea.

also on the 8th at 6.30pm

Summer Camp for kids age 7-12

From July 13 – August 7, the OPEN SOURCE gallery will host a weekly camp/workshop, for kids ages 7-12, where children will be supervised in the construction of creative, fun and functional soap box racers out of recycled material. The artists Hubert Dobler and Monika Wuhrer will conduct the workshop.
Workshop hours: 9am-1pm Monday through Friday*

We will introduce the kids to different tools and supervise them closely while they build their contraptions with hammer, nails, handsaw, screws, etc. Besides hands-on building, we will encourage the kids to plan on paper, sketch images, make drawings of their invention and to think out of the box .. We will spend plenty of time outside, collecting found objects and materials and testing our designs at each stage. We might also take breaks to play ball or have free play at the park/playground – the time spent will depend on the different kids and their needs.

All construction will take place at the OPEN SOURCE gallery, a store front with a lot of light, a nice place to be and work. We have access to an outdoor space with a slight incline one half block away that we will be using in addition to the Gallery. This will serve as the perfect test track for our soap boxes in their different building stages. All participants, families and friends are welcome to be part of the derby on August 8th (see below).

Please Email us first to check for availability, then download the form below and send it to: Monika Wuhrer: 257 17th street, Brooklyn, NY 11215, including the $50 deposit.
