Hubert Dobler: June 6th – July 1st
3 Prisoners
In June, a physical record of desperate confinement will be on display at open source gallery. The scenario, by Hubert Dobler, is the fictional incarceration of three “prisoners” (mutant chainsaws with motorcycle wheels) and the evidence of their resultant activities. This site-specific installation, and Dobler’s continued incorporation of motorbikes (symbols of freedom and rebellion) in his work, represent an ongoing investigation into the limits of freedom within the bounds of civil society. Opening reception is June 6th, please join the artist for a toast to reckless abandon.

Gary Baldwin: May 2nd – June 4th
Opening: Saturday, May 2nd
Are We Not Famous Men?

Ecclesiasticus: “Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us.”
Walker Evans’ impassioned, genre-shattering photography in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men represents a major influence on Gary Baldwin’s current work. Yet the radically agitated indifference of Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, (Devo’s equally well-observed yet rhetorically antithetical debut album), holds just as much sway. This ongoing series of portraiture, Are We Not Famous Men?, explores both the necessity and impossibility of capturing the constant flux of life in a snapshot. These photographs of family, friends and neighbors have taken on a life of their own, like protagonists in novels whose author has lost the ability to contain them. Ultimately, the “rogue” characters displayed here, despite profound individuality, answer with an emphatic yes the question of whether or not we are all worthy of praise. They answer with the force of their common humanity.
Second Saturday Event: June 13, 7-10pm

Joseph Krings: All Aboard Future

Relish, Savor, Enjoy (Create Flavors For a Happy Life)
Using textures and abstractions photographed in China, I am examining the present culture and lifestyle of the ancient
cradle of Chinese civilization which is Shanxi Province and the current cultural and political cradle which is Beijing. Shanxi
Province has a deep and rich cultural history that is thousands of years old. Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, has
recently emerged as a major industrial city, fueling the growth of China with much needed energy resources. Taiyuan City
is a leader in terms of the world’s worst air quality which is mostly caused by emissions from coal burning electricity plants
and steel production facilities. Additionally, Taiyuan has one of the highest ratios of actual to potential desert on earth and
as a result, is very quietly running out of water. With a small population of 3.5 million, Taiyuan is on the verge of becoming
one of China’s most hushed eco-disasters. Despite this rather grim future tense, Taiyuan continues to build and expand.
With the 2008 Olympics finally behind us, Beijing has emerged as a post-modern major international city in the global
arena. Working with photographic images from both of these unique locations in China I am combining textures and surfaces which reflect everyday life in China with images gathered from the many important cultural, archeological and historical sites, temples, art museums, and ancient cities around Shanxi Province and Beijing. The entire body of images weave together images of fragments and pieces from the present and the past found in these two extraordinary, historically significant places in China. The entire body of work ultimately suggests a rich cultural past overlaid on a future which is both full of challenges and hope as China transitions into an international super power.
The images are constructed from digital photographs and video I made while working in Taiyuan, Ping Yao and Beijing. The images are raster, vector, and time-based conversions assembled from a multitude of digital images video frames shot over the course of four years of travel and exploration of the region. They are images of an urban landscape that suggest a future that may never be realized and reveal a lifestyle that is both impossible and unimaginable. So why not… simply Relish, Savor, and Enjoy as we create flavors for a happy life.
Sara Bouchard: April 4th, 8pm

Songs of Lewis & Clark
Singer/songwriter Sara Bouchard’s “Songs of Lewis & Clark” is a song cycle setting the journals of Lewis and Clark to music. The songs reveal moments of awe, reflection, humor and joy during the course of the American expedition of 1804-1806. The album, released in November 2008, features Sara’s lyrical vocals and subtle, unique style of fingerpicking on guitar and mandolin.
The concept of “Songs of Lewis & Clark,” with its lyrics taken directly from the journals, arose from an investigation into American myth, history and roots music. Sara was inspired by the literary strength of the journals:
“As I began reading the journals, particular passages began to jump off the page – the language was so much like poetry to me. I began to sing them into songs, songs influenced by all kinds of American music, especially folk, blues, spirituals, and rock and roll. I’ve let the words inform the melody and song structure, and I’ve kept the instrumentation spare. As a result, the songs don’t really adhere to a genre; they are, simply, songs.”
Born in Stockton, California, Sara left the west coast to attend college at Yale University where she studied art and music composition and received her bachelor’s degree in studio art in 2003.

The Monster Project
The Monster Project | MonsterBASH
Opening reception and BBQ July 4th, 4-7pm
more monsters are crawling out from under the beds of New York City schoolchildren and onto the streets of Brooklyn this summer!
Bring your KIDS!
Celebrate local children’s art.
Food, crafts, music & fun.
FREE drinks.
In a collaborative effort with New York City public school children, Kylin O’Brien is painting giant monsters around the city.
Still in its early stages, the monster project launched its first huge public creatures at the 12th Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival in DUMBO Brooklyn, Sept. 26th-28th 2008.
These creatures are elements of children’s imaginations and reflections of what they find both powerful and frightening. As neighborhood murals, they are transformed into local guardians. They are very much a commentary on our collective strengths and fears.
Kylin’s aim with the monster project is to subtly refine children’s drawings while being true to their vision and energy. The kids’ work is already fine and poignant. The project’s work is to share it, well.
Upon successful completion of the first monster murals, Kylin was awarded and funded by the Brooklyn Arts Council to collaborate with more students and to bring their visions to “roam” on 17th street in and around Open Source Gallery.
