Anne Bassen 9.7.08 @ 6pm

Anne Bassen and invited guest performers will be performing improvisational movement theater in the gallery space on Sept. 7 at 6 pm using found objects and the environment of the gallery as source material.

Ms. Bassen has been performing improvisational dance for fifteen years as well as receiving acclaim for choreographed work. She often creates site specific dances in public spaces such as the community gardens of the East Village. Ms. Bassen has received numerous grants for her work from such notable institutions as the NEA and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

This work is a constantly growing collection of found footage image out of magazines.

It shows eyes of fashion models in which the outlines of a dark, indistinctive figure can be seen – the silhouette of the original photographer.
The extreme blow up creates a strange triangle between the viewer, the person looking at you (the eyes) and the black figure also looking out of the image. (normaly the viewer would be the one reflected in the pupil, but the space is already taken by someone else…)
The object-subject matter, who is in control of the view – one of the main issues of photography – is shown on an abstract level.
